Professor
Gibb is former Professor of Small Business Management and Chairman
of the Foundation for Small and Medium Enterprise Development at
Durham University in the UK. The Foundation, formerly the Small
Business Centre, has an international reputation for its work in
the field of enterprise, entrepreneurship and small business management
development. The original Centre, was set up by Professor Gibb in
1971, and became the largest of its kind in Europe. Its major focus
is upon research-based approaches to solving policy and process
problems of managing small businesses and the small business stakeholder
environment and which translate into practice. These are frequently
developed into teaching and consultancy programmes subsequently
disseminated nationally and internationally.
Allan
Gibb has been responsible for the development of a wide range
of innovative approaches to small business management in the
UK and internationally. In the 1970s and 1980s he worked very
closely with the UK government and business in support of local
enterprise development, and particularly small firm counselling
and training services. He devised and ran all of the training
for the DTI Small Firms Counselling Service for many years and
was instrumental in working alongside Business in the Community
in the training and development of the directors and key staff
of virtually all of the UK Local Enterprise Agencies. He has
served on many advisory boards and committees both public and
private. He has been consultant on small business to the European
Commission, World Bank, UNIDO, ILO, ITC and the UK, Canadian,
Nigerian, Malaysian, Russian and Ukraine Governments. He was
a member of the small team that wrote the initial Terms of Reference
document for the establishment of the European Union Small Firms
Directorate - DG XX111. He has worked as adviser, teacher and
trainer in countries all over the world. |
|
Since
1989 he has worked extensively in Central and Eastern Europe with
universities, management schools, governments, local authorities,
private foundations and companies in the field of small enterprise
development, management teacher training, large company downsizing,
local enterprise agency development, institution development, consultant
and counsellor training and the management of the regulatory environment
for small business. Allan Gibb has published widely in the field
of Entrepreneurship and Small Business and has lectured worldwide.
He has worked closely with the European Foundation for Management
Development, was the first Chairman of the UK Enterprise Management
Research Association (now ISBA), has been a Vice-president of the
International Council for Small Business and helped to establish
the European Council for Small Business. He serves on the Editorial
Boards of many of the major journals in the field.
